america's #1, side a, reface of history (1998)

this is a spread from a notebook i made in 1998 where i dissected an american history book from the 1940s starting on one end of the notebook and the adverts in the current sunday paper starting transversely on the other end, both of which overlapped and ended at the centerfold. a spread from the adverts side can be seen here: [link] and the centerfold here: [link] there are twenty pages for each book within the notebook. as i recall, it was nauseating reading, dissecting and re-presenting elements from the history book and just as nauseating studying, dissecting and pasting-up the current consumer goods circus on display- the latter of which i usually stay clear of. but it was fun to be done too!

[edit: links are broken until dA storage is back up]

"and the Indian power was broken forever." Yikes!

This is a brilliant concept! I like the style behind your projects. Someday, I'll have to regale you with my idea to write a book that was all footnotes and no main text!

I've always hated the expression "great war".

But I love this piece.
this piece sort of makes my stomach all squashy. which means you've accomplished a whole lot. goodness me but the story is thick in here...

oh this is so cool! i love that sort of methodical work pace. i read NYNewsday cover to cover for 6 months cutting out every absurd, violent, or strange sentence that i found. i hated it! but the work was worth it!

these are all great!
